ABOUT THE SHOW:
Spiegelworld’s DiscoShow is inspired by the spirit of David Mancuso's famous Loft parties which erupted out of the squalor and oppression of 1970s New York and gave birth to disco. The DJ was worshiped and salvation was found on the dance floor. A group of young New Yorkers, from all corners of the city, invite you to join them on a night out as they embrace their lust for life and search for the space where they can live out loud. DiscoShow is an experiential event with a 1970s soul and a 21st century attitude. Set inside a transformative space, this 70-minute live show is unlike any other entertainment in Las Vegas – an intensity of light, sound, LED video, movement, dance, humor and emotion. We are invited to step inside the action with the characters; into their lives, on the streets, at the club - encouraged at every moment to lose and find ourselves in the music. To have fun. And to dance.
SEEKING:Individual DANCERS, CHARACTERS, FEMALE VOCALISTS who are TRAINED DANCERS and DANCERS WHO ROLLER SKATE.
We're not just looking for performers; we're searching for storytellers who are thrilled at the prospect of working on a show that allows them to have an interactive experience with the audience. The show requires people with an infectious energy and a real commitment to truly engaging with individual audience members.
We require performers with impeccable dance abilities, but it's crucial to emphasize that we're not solely seeking technically precise dancers. We seek artists who can infuse their movements with life, passion, and genuine storytelling. Dancers who can improvise and have fun.
We are looking for folks who can commit wholeheartedly to the devising process. While prior experience in developing new work is preferred, a strong aptitude and willingness to dive into this approach is equally valued.
Spiegelworld welcomes performers of all races and ethnicities, gender identities, and sexualities to apply for all roles.
This is a non-union production.
ROLES:
Sheila: Black, female, 30+ DANCER. Sheila is a nurse by day, and a stunning disco diva by night. She is the coolest, most sensual and puckish presence in the club. She is unfussy, understated and there is not one fake thing about her. She slides onto the dance floor and simply belongs there with earned ease. She brings everyone together with obvious power and quiet authority. There is a real political undercurrent to who she is. Strong singing skills preferred (Alto).
Brent: Male, mid 30’s DANCER. Brent is an alpha male. Muscular build. A buttoned-up, suited and straight-laced banker during the day; he appears older than he is, and carefully hides his queerness. Then, like Clark Kent, the glasses come off to reveal a confident Disco Superman in muscle-revealing vest, shorts and boots. A brilliant dancer who has amazing moves and freedom as soon as he hits the club. Eric: Male, early 20’s DANCER. Eric is a young, lithe innocent, new to the city. The physical opposite of Brent. Works at McDonalds flipping burgers, but photography is his passion. He is exploring his queer identity through this disco journey. His confidence builds in the club and on the dancefloor – becoming a wild, free, and graceful dancer by the end of the night. Ted: Male, 20’s to 30’s ROLLER SKATER WHO DANCES. At first glance, Ted blends into the crowd. Could be an awkward Dungeons and Dragons dweeb, an unassuming Morgan Stanley guy in a suit, or a first-time Vegas tourist in cargo shorts. However, his true magic emerges when he is pulled from the crowd and joins the Roller Squad. Ted transforms into an integral part of the squad, breaking any preconceptions about his appearance. Needs to be an amazing roller skater and have warmth, wit, and impressive physical stamina. He is the person least likely to be picked, but surprises everyone when he roller skates and moves like a demon. Transformation is key. Roller Squad: ROLLER SKATERS WHO DANCE. Athena, Aphrodite and Apollo: Vibrant, confident, playful nymphs who are the best and most fearless roller skaters on the planet — and are also up for lots of fun and interaction with the audience. Wherever they go, they get the party started! Speed, agility, and precision are vital skills for these roller skaters. We are seeking confidence, safety, and no chaos. Skills should be transferable between skating and dance. Anthony: Black, male, late 20’s DANCER. Anthony is a UPS delivery man during the day, and a disco devil by night. Seems very unassuming in his work uniform, but we do see occasional glimpses of rhythm and moves. He really comes alive on the dance floor. Rosario: Latina, female, 20’s DANCER. Rosario is a 7/11 worker and an amazing dancer. She’s new to the city, but not new to clubbing or getting into the spirit of the night. The disco is freedom and escape for her. No shyness or timidity on her part. She finds the rhythm wherever she goes and is always breaking into dance. Tina: Female, 20’s/30’s DANCER. Tina is a square who’s never been to a disco in her life. Not from New York, she’s dressed in a gray skirt, white blouse and large glasses for her office job when we first meet her. She appears clumsy and not at all confident in her body. Her husband has just left her, and she finds herself being led out to the disco as a place of sanctuary, adventure and self-discovery. A quirky, funny misfit who eventually surprises us with her incredible moves. Ake: Male 30’s COMIC ACTOR WHO DANCES. Åke is a Finnish disco dance teacher resurrected from the 1970’s and inspired by the real-life television star Åke Blomqvist. A quirky comedic character who uses stories about his strange upbringing in Finland to teach us all the best disco moves. He’s very quick witted. The ability to improvise and interact with the audience is essential. A brilliant dancer too.
